Description

The Church of St Michael and All Angels has been the centre of Christian worship in Kingsland for many centuries. The present building was erected between 1290 and 1310 by the Mortimers. The church is today substantially as the builders left it.

Opening off the entrance which is the North porch is the Volka Chapel - a unique feature - probably built as a chantry in which masses could be said for those killed in the Battle of Mortimers Cross (1461), which was fought mainly in the Great West Field of the parish. A Eucharist is celebrated annually in the Volka Chapel on Candlemas - February 2nd - the anniversary of the battle, when prayers are said for all who fell on that day.

The church stall offers cards, candles and other small gifts, and there is a variety of information about the surrounding district.

The church overlooks the Millennium Green, the excellent Village PO / Tea Rooms, and the Angel Inn, one of the oldest buildings. Many visitors enjoy sitting on the Green, children have their own play area there, and if you like to sketch you will be spoilt for choice of subject.
