Medieval Politics in the Marches: Warfare, Conquest and Marriage

In addition to walking through beautiful countryside, the walk will provide glimpses into the history of Presteigne and Stapleton in the medieval period when the Welsh Marches were of great national importance. Powerful Anglo-Norman lords fought, schemed and married to gain control of independent lordships and the opportunity for conquest into Wales. In return, Welsh Princes invaded and ransacked Presteigne. Starting and finishing in Wales, the walk soon crosses the border into England; most of the walk is in the attractive rolling countryside of Herefordshire on quiet roads, footpaths, some tracks and with a number of stiles. The route goes through farmland and woodland with a gradual ascent past Stocken Wood and descent through Stapleton Wood. The walk will include visits to The Warden, the site of the medieval castle in Presteigne, St Andrew’s Church, and Stapleton Castle which is privately owned.
