Cycling in Mortimer Country

Mortimer Country in North Herefordshire has fabulous cycling for everyone.

Easy cycling on quiet country lanes

The most popular route around the Teme Valley is ideal for all abilities, start from Wheely Wonderful Cycling at Elton. You can also start this cycle ride from Leintwardine or Wigmore. Map download

Mortimer Country Cider Cycling route

A new cycle route to celebrate Mortimer Country's cider making heritage.  At one time all the farms brewed their own cider and new varieties of apple were bred  by Thomas Andrew Knight, who lived at Downton Castle and Elton, he was a leading 18th century horticulturist & botanist who helped develop many of the fruit & vegetable varieties that we still eat today. He later went on to become president of the Royal Horticultural Society and 200 year s ago to publish Pomona Herefordiensis, the first colour illustrated Pomona (Book of Apples) in the world.  Today, try local cider at our great pubs, and lunch in the Cider barn restaurant ( with cider mill) at the Baron at Bucknell.  Follow this link to  find out more information about cider cycling  and cider production in Herefordshire.  Click on the map below to download the Mortimer Country Cider cycling route.

Cycle Hire

is available from Wheely Wonderful Cycling.

Mountain Biking

We also have top class mountain biking routes in Hopton Wood Mountain Bike Trails - 20 miles of woodland tracks – including a family route and a competition route for experienced Mountain bikers.  (Available from Visitor Information Centres, or from 01889 586 593).  You can also cycle the offroad tracks in Mortimer Forest, near Ludlow.  Pearce Cycles in Ludlow offer a regular "uplift" event for downhill mountainbiking.

Cycling Maps

Our country lanes are so quiet that every where is a joy to cycle – but to get the best information about where to cycle, pick up the Cycling for Pleasure maps (click to order) - network of routes (on and off-road) linking all areas through North Herefordshire and the borders.
