Clun Food and Drink

Food and Drink in Clun and Places to Eat in Clun

Clun in Mortimer Country is the place to come to eat and drink. Local farm produce and some outstanding restaurants mean that visitors are spoilt for choice. And Clun's closest market town is Ludlow, renowned for its Food & Drink Festivals and Michelin Starred restaurants.

Mortimer Country restaurants can be found at the following Hotels; The Lion Hotel in Leintwardine and Milebrook House hotel, at the renowned restaurants of the Jolly Frog and Old Downton Lodge. And at the Baron at Bucknell Country Inn. All offer Lunch and dinner using freshly prepared food using flair and imagination. They pride themselves on using locally sourced and seasonal menus. Many vegetables are grown in the restaurants’ kitchen gardens, the rest are sourced locally. All meat is local, from the Welsh lamb and beef to the pork and organic chicken etc. and of course local cheeses. Seasonal game comes from the nearby estates and venison from Mortimer Forest. Ice creams and sorbets are prepared often using our home-grown fruit. Bread, pastries and petit fours are all prepared in house.

Country Inns in Clun, sell local Cider and local beers from the award winning Hobson's Brewery, Ludlow Brewery and Wye Valley Brewery. Visit the Sun In at Leintwardine for a truly memorable visit to an historic Parlour pub – unchanged for nearly 100 years. Or sit by the riverside at the  Lion Hotel. Or drink in the old cider barn at the Baron at Bucknell. There are plenty of other traditional pub and inns to discover on your holiday. Try a walk to a pub for lunch or spend an evening relaxing over a local pint of cider, Clun pubs are welcoming and often have local music nights. Country pubs and inns generally are open for lunch between 11 – 2pm and evening meals between 6.30 and 9pm. Its always a good idea to check opening times before you set out.

Tearooms usually open between 10am and 5pm and offer traditional tea and cake, cream teas or coffee and pastries. They also serve light lunches. Like the restaurants and pubs, they pride themselves on using local ingredients and recipes. You can also combine a visit to a castle with a tearoom, by visiting the National Trust Tearoom at Croft and the tearoom in the Aardvark Book’s huge rural bookstore, with also happens to be next to Brampton Bryan Castle. Work up an appetite by cycling to any of these tearooms. Wheely Wonderful Cycling will provide you with bikes and route maps.

Clun also has that most British of institutions, a Fish & Chip shop at Leintwardine.  Its traditional menu of fish & chips (local Clun potatoes) is available as a "take away" or you can place your order and it will be freshly cooked and delivered to you to eat at the Sun Inn, which is located next door to the Fish & Chip shop in Leintwardine..

Food Festivals, celebrate our local food & drink produced in Clun . Visit Shobdon Food & Flying Festival in June and Mortimer Country Food Fair at Brampton Bryan in august with lots of stalls , demonstrations and food fun. And of course, Clun is an ideal place to stay to visit Ludlow's two Famous food festival in May and September.
