the Shropshire Hills Walking

Walking in the Shropshire Hills

Mortimer Country, is superb walking country. The are routes suitable for all levels of walking, from leisurely strolls to the pub or around a picturesque village. Well marked trails around local forests and country estates, to countryside rambles.  Mortimer Country is also home to several nationally recognized long distance Walking Trails.  Every village in the area, like the Shropshire Hills has easy access to some great walks, see our walking page and walking festival page for more details.  We add more information to these pages as often as we can.

Here are a few of the highlights

The Mortimer Trail is a 30 mile Walking route from the Kington to Ludlow. It is an ideal long distance walk to spend a few days walking. Either book a 3 day walking holiday package with all accommodation, luggage transfers and maps. Or do your own thing and book Bed & Breakfast or a self catering holiday cottage. This is an ideal walking holiday to take your dog along - as the majority of the walk follows Forest paths. There are also a range of loop walks - ideal if you want to fit in a pub lunch too.

Offa's Dyke National Trail - borders the Mortimer Country countryside, so if you are planning a walk along the Offa's Dyke why not use accommodation from the Shropshire Hills for this stage of the walking trail. Or use your base in your holiday cottage to walk along sections of the Offa's Dyke. This stretch of Offa's Dyke  has the best remains of the Offa's Dyke earthworks. Wheely Wonderful Cycling also has holiday walking packages along the Offas' Dyke making the holiday organization easy for you.

Walking With Offa' - there is a range of well written and signposted routes around Mortimer Country - especially from Bucknell.  See the Mortimer Country website for downloadable maps.

Bus Walks. Use the local buses and the Castle Connect bus service to walk one of the range of short walks around Mortimer Country. Maps are downloadable from the Mortimer Country Website.

National Trust Walks - Croft Castle  has a range of walks around its estate, which overlap with the Mortimer Trail all start from Croft Castle.

Mortimer Forest Walks - starting from High Vinnalls car park on the Wigmore road and Black pool car park, near Richards Castle. Signposted walks , including an all ability trail on good forest tracks.

Walking events and Mortimer Country Walking Festival. There are lots of guided walks throughout the year in Mortimer Country. Many of these walks take you into areas which are not usually accessible to the public, like the Brampton Bryan  "walk in the Park" Check our events guide and our Walking Festival Page.
