Wigmore - The Mortimer Castle

Wigmore village view in north herefordshire near ludlow

Wigmore was the home to the Mortimer family in Herefordshire - and it is dominated by the romantic ruins of Wigmore Castle, which is managed by English Heritage.  There is also a grand Norman church and the Norman burgage street layout is still visible.  From Wigmore and Ludlow Castle, the Mortimer's controlled the lands of Wales and the English borders.   Now this is a busy farming village centred on its school and community run village shop.
